What Are Upper Lip Lines?

Fine, vertical lines develop through a combination of declining collagen, UV exposure, and the repeated movement of the ring muscle around the mouth (Musculus orbicularis oris) — from speaking, drinking, or pursing the lips. Depending on which factor dominates, I smooth them with a muscle relaxant or with superficial hyaluronic acid.

Important: this is not about adding lip volume or fullness — that would be lip volume treatment or a Lip Flip. Both approaches can be combined if desired — we'll advise you individually.

Muscle Relaxant

The ring muscle around the mouth moves thousands of times a day. If the lines mainly show up with this movement, I relax the muscle in a targeted way in the upper lip area. Unlike a Lip Flip, the goal here isn't more visible lip-red but smoothing the lines — dose and injection points are adjusted accordingly.

Option B

Hyaluronic Acid

If the lines are also visible when the mouth is relaxed, declining collagen usually plays a bigger role. I place low-viscosity hyaluronic acid very superficially along the lip border — unlike lip volume treatment, this is about smoothing, not fullness.

Fits better when: the lines are visible even without any expression.

Muscle relaxant or hyaluronic acid — what is the difference for upper lip lines?

Both paths address a different cause. A muscle relaxant relaxes the ring muscle around the mouth (Musculus orbicularis oris) when the lines mainly show up during movement — speaking, smiling, pursing the lips. Hyaluronic acid supports the fold superficially when it is also visible at rest and collagen loss is the cause. Often a combination makes sense. Which path fits you, we clarify in the consultation.

Is this the same as a Lip Flip?

No, even though both work on the same muscle. The Lip Flip aims for more visible lip-red and a fuller effect. Smoothing upper lip lines targets the fine lines instead — dose and injection points are adjusted accordingly, though a slight change in lip shape is still possible. Is the treatment painful?

The lip region is sensitive, so we apply a numbing cream beforehand on request. Many patients find both procedures well tolerated.

Is the result visible right away?

With the hyaluronic acid treatment, the smoothing effect is usually visible immediately, with the final result after mild swelling subsides (about 3-5 days). With the muscle relaxant, the effect sets in after a few days and fully develops over about two weeks.

Can the treatment be reversed if I don't like it?

With hyaluronic acid, yes: it can be precisely dissolved again with the enzyme hyaluronidase — more on our hyaluronidase page. The muscle relaxant cannot be actively reversed, but its effect fades on its own — in the lip region, usually after 2-3 months.

How long does the result last?

The hyaluronic acid usually lasts 6-9 months — the lip region is under constant movement, so it breaks down somewhat faster here than in calmer areas of the face. The muscle relaxant works for a shorter time, about 2-3 months.
