Fine lines running vertically from the lip border — often most pronounced on the upper lip — develop through a combination of declining collagen, UV exposure, and the repeated movement of the orbicularis oris muscle around the mouth — from speaking, drinking, or pursing the lips. They often appear before any visible volume loss in the lip itself. At minimal med, we treat these lines with low-viscosity hyaluronic acid, placed very superficially along the lip border — different from lip volume treatment, which focuses on fullness and shape. Both approaches can be combined if desired. An overview of all options is on the wrinkle treatment Munich page.

How the Treatment Works
Detailed consultation: we assess the lines and discuss whether smoothing alone or a combination with lip volume makes sense.
Preparation: the lip area is cleansed and numbed with cream if desired.
Precise injection: very fine needles place the hyaluronic acid superficially along the lip border — takes about 20-30 minutes.
Aftercare: you receive care instructions. Mild swelling usually subsides within a few days.
Why fine lines form here specifically
The ring muscle around the mouth moves thousands of times a day — speaking, eating, drinking, smiling. This constant movement, combined with declining collagen, makes the lip area especially prone to fine vertical lines, often starting in the mid-30s.
Technique determines the outcome
The lip area mainly calls for low-viscosity, superficially injected hyaluronic acid — thicker, volumizing product would be the wrong choice here. Product selection and injection depth largely determine whether the result looks natural.
Often a combination topic
Many patients who come in for lip lines also want a touch more lip volume during the consultation — and vice versa. Both can be discussed in one session and combined if desired.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the treatment painful?
The lip area is sensitive, so we apply a numbing cream beforehand if desired. Many patients find the treatment well tolerated.
Is the result visible immediately?
The smoothing effect is usually visible right away. In the first few days, mild swelling can slightly distort the final look — the true result shows after about 3-5 days.
Can the treatment be reversed if I don't like it?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid can be dissolved in a targeted way with the enzyme hyaluronidase — more on our hyaluronidase page. That's one reason many patients choose a conservative amount for the lip area at first.
Will this make my lips bigger?
Pure lip-line treatment focuses on smoothing the fine lines, not adding volume. If you'd also like more lip volume, we can discuss that during consultation — both can be combined.
Can this cause lumps or an unnatural shine?
With correct, superficial injection technique and low-viscosity product, this risk is low. Product choice and injection depth are decisive here — which is why we always start with an individual assessment.
How long does the result last?
Typically 6-9 months. Because the lip area moves constantly, hyaluronic acid breaks down somewhat faster here than in less mobile facial areas.
What does the treatment cost?
Lip line treatment starts from 249 EUR (0.5ml). The exact price depends on the amount needed and is determined during consultation.
