"Should I get Profhilo or skinboosters?" I hear this question all the time. Both treatments aim to improve skin quality — but they work in different ways. Here I explain the differences.
What is Profhilo?
Profhilo is a highly concentrated hyaluronic acid product (64 mg/2 ml) that does not act as a traditional filler. Instead, it spreads through the tissue and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin — a principle that belongs to regenerative aesthetics. The result: firmer, plumper skin from within.
The treatment is performed at just 5 points per side of the face (BAP technique). From there, the product distributes evenly.
What are skinboosters?
Skinboosters (such as Restylane Skinboosters or Juvederm Volite) are thin hyaluronic acid gels that are introduced into the skin through many small injections spread across the treatment area. They bind moisture and thereby improve the skin's texture.
The comparison
| Aspect | Profhilo | Skinbooster |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanism | Biostimulation (collagen/elastin) | Moisture binding |
| Injection points | 10 points (5 per side) | Many small injections |
| Results visible | After 2–4 weeks | Immediately (glow), full effect after 2–3 sessions |
| Sessions | 2 sessions, 4 weeks apart | 3 sessions, 2–4 weeks apart |
| Duration | 6–12 months | 6–9 months |
| Ideal for | Sagging skin, tightening | Dry skin, fine lines, glow |
When do I recommend which?
Profhilo — I recommend it for:
- Early skin laxity
- Loss of skin elasticity
- A desire for tightening without volume
- Neck and decolletage
- Patients from around 35–40 onwards
Skinboosters — I recommend them for:
- Dry, dull skin
- Fine surface lines
- A desire for an immediate glow
- Younger patients (including under 30)
- As a complement to other treatments
Can both be combined?
Yes, and I do this often. Profhilo for deeper tightening, skinboosters for the surface glow. The combination can deliver excellent results — staggered over time or in different areas. You can read more about effective combinations in our article on combination treatments.
My conclusion
In my practice, I reach for Profhilo far more often than for skinboosters — simply because most patients who come to see me have already moved past the stage where skinboosters alone would be enough. But that does not mean Profhilo is always the answer. For a 28-year-old with dry skin who wants a glow before her wedding, skinboosters are spot on. Profhilo's collagen stimulation would be overkill.
My advice: come with your skin, not with a decision. If you are also wondering how Profhilo compares to traditional hyaluronic acid fillers, read our comparison Profhilo vs. hyaluronic acid filler. During a consultation, I will look at your skin and tell you what I honestly think will make the biggest difference — sometimes the answer is something else entirely.
