Lips are my most frequent treatment — and at the same time, the one where the most can go wrong aesthetically. Not medically, but in terms of the result: too much, too uniform, not right for the face. Here is what actually matters.
What happens during lip augmentation?
During a lip augmentation, hyaluronic acid — a substance naturally found in the body — is injected into the lips using fine needles. The gel adds volume, defines the contours, and can also smooth fine lines around the lips.
Hyaluronic acid binds water, giving the lips a plump, natural appearance. The effect is visible immediately, but the final result shows after about two weeks, once any swelling has subsided.
How much filler do I need?
The right amount depends on your starting point and your goals:
- 0.5 ml: Subtle enhancement, contour definition — ideal for a first treatment
- 1 ml: Natural volume — the most common amount
- More than 1 ml: Only for larger lips or after careful consultation
My advice: start with less. You can always add more, but too much can only be corrected with hyaluronidase (a dissolving agent). A natural result is the goal — lips that suit your face.
How does the treatment work?
Before the treatment
- Consultation: we discuss your wishes and I explain what is realistic
- No blood thinners (aspirin, ibuprofen) for one week beforehand
- No alcohol the evening before
The treatment itself
- A numbing cream is applied (left on for about 15 to 20 minutes)
- Disinfection and marking
- Injection with fine needles or a cannula
- Massage to ensure even distribution
- Cooling pads for the first few minutes
The actual treatment takes about 15 to 30 minutes. Including preparation, you should plan for approximately 45 minutes.
After the treatment
- Mild swelling for one to three days (normal)
- Possible small bruises
- No exercise or sauna for 24 to 48 hours
- Final result visible after approximately two weeks
What does lip augmentation cost?
The cost of lip augmentation in Munich varies depending on the amount used:
- Lip contour (0.5 ml): from 219 euros
- Lip volume (1 ml): from 299 euros
- Additional ml: from 149 euros
The price includes the consultation, the treatment, and a follow-up appointment after two weeks.
How long does the result last?
The lips are one of the most demanding areas for filler. Constant movement — talking, eating, kissing — means hyaluronic acid breaks down faster here than elsewhere.
Realistic expectation: six to nine months of visible results. With regular top-ups, many patients find the result lasts progressively longer over time.
What are the risks?
Lip augmentation is a well-tolerated treatment when performed by an experienced physician. Possible side effects include:
- Common: Swelling, redness, small bruises (resolve within a few days)
- Rare: Uneven distribution (can be corrected), small lumps
- Very rare: Allergic reaction, infection
The biggest "risk" is a result that does not meet your expectations. That is why the consultation is so important — we clarify beforehand exactly what is possible and what you are hoping for.
Russian Lips vs. natural lips
"Russian Lips" is a technique that creates particularly full, defined lips with an emphasised cupid's bow. The result is more striking than the classic technique.
My opinion: Russian Lips can look beautiful — but they do not suit every face. I will give you honest advice on which technique works for you. Sometimes less is more.
Can hyaluronic acid be dissolved?
Yes. With hyaluronidase, hyaluronic acid can be dissolved at any time. This is one of the major advantages over other fillers: the result is fully reversible.
I use hyaluronidase when:
- A patient is not happy with the result
- Irregularities need to be corrected
- Too much filler was injected (for example, elsewhere)
Who is lip augmentation suitable for?
The treatment is suitable for:
- Naturally thin lips that could benefit from a little more volume
- Asymmetric lips
- Lips that have become thinner with age
- Loss of lip contour
- Upper lip lines ("smoker's lines")
My advice
Lip augmentation can deliver wonderful results — when done correctly. Choose your physician carefully, take your time with the decision, and start with less rather than more.
If you are unsure whether the treatment is right for you, book a no-obligation consultation. I will assess your lips and give you my honest recommendation — even if the answer is that you do not need anything.
